Toyota Rally News

07/10/2011 - New Event coming to  Royal Bath & West Showground

There is a new televised two day event the Regency Stage Rally being organised by Weston-Super-Mare Motor Club at the Showground. This venue should make for some very interesting Stage layouts for the Corolla incorporating a small jump and two night stages. www.regencystages.com

25/09/2011 - Patriot Stages

The Team have just returned from the Bob Dowen Patriot Stage Rally another MSA Asphalt Championship round. The conditions were challenging and the Corolla finished 7th overall and 2nd in Class. See Rally Reports  for more details and don't forget  Motors TV coverage on 29th October 10.35pm

17/09/2011 - Castle Combe Rally

Once again the GT4OC invited us to represent them on their Stand with the Celica st185. Unfortunately, the weather was not so gracious this year and amongst the heavy rain showers Gary took part in demonstration runs on the main race circuit and did a crowd pleasing display of donuts on the Feature Stage!! There is a scheduled TV programme of Rally Day on Motors TV on 12th October 20.00pm.

25/06/11 - Goodwood Festival of Speed

Gary has been asked by Toyota Europe to drive an ex-Carlos Sainz Celica st185 on the Forest Stage at this years Festival of Speed. This car was built in 1992, and first used by Armin Schwartz on the 1992 Acropolis Rally, where it famously crashed on the same corner as the sister car of Marku Alen (Alen's car landed on top of this one). It was then repaired and used by Carlos Sainz to finish in 3rd place on 1992 Rally of Australia and helped him to secure the 1992 World Rally Championship for drivers. It competed in Repsol colours of white and red, (Carlos Sainz's personal sponsors).

After many years of competing in his own st185, Gary is very much looking forward to driving this famous car.

17/18th June  - Rally of the Midlands 2011

The Corolla at the Ceremonial Finish in Bedworth Town Centre. Gary and Paul completed all of the 24 Special Stages and at that point they believed they'd come 4th Overall unfortunately the fuel pump issues they'd encountered on the road section had taken them too long to sort out and when the final results came in they were declared OTL.  See Rally Reports for full details.

28/05/11 - Corolla Wins Launch Motorsport Stages

Gary and Paul returned to one on their favourite venues Down Ampney and took top honours. It is the fourth time that the pair have won this Rally organised by Emcos Motor Club. See Rally Reports for full details.  (Picture taken by EDP Photography).

16/03/11  - Flying High at the Tour of Epynt

       Picture taken by Alix Jones

The Team has just returned from the first round of the MSA Championship on the Epynt Ranges in Wales. A pleasing result 18th overall and 3rd in Class. See Rally Reports for full details.

21/02/11 - Kynaston Autos Stage Rally - 2nd Overall

After overcoming several earlier problems on the morning stages, the Team set some good stage times and pulled back in the afternoon finishing in 2nd place. See Rally Reports for full details.

10/02/11 - Final Test before opening round of MSA National Championship.

The Team have decided to enter the Corolla WRC in the Kynaston Auto Services Rally at Smeatharpe three weeks prior to the 1st round of the MSA Championship the Tour of Epynt.

04/02/11 - Regency Stages Postponed

Just received a Press Release that sadly the Regency Stages has had to be postponed until later in the year. This is unfortunate as we were all looking forward to tackling this new event which was on our doorstep! Lets hope the revised date doesn't clash with any of our planned MSA rounds.

11/01/11 - Looking Ahead!

The Events page has now been updated for the 2011 season which you will note includes six rounds of the MSA National Asphalt Rally Championship. This is the main area that we wish to focus on but there will also be some other events added along the way - so keep watching!!

01/01/11 - HAPPY NEW YEAR to all our friends and supporters - Lets hope it's a good one!

26/09/10 - Podium Finish at Patriot Stages

The penultimate round of the MSA Asphalt Rally Championship turned out to be a very successful day for the Team. Gary and Paul brought the Corolla home third overall despite an off on stage one and Paul scored maximum MSA Championship points as rally winner Simon Mauger's co-driver was not registered for the championship. The recent modifications to the rear suspension paid off as the car felt much more stable. See Rally Reports for full details.

18/09/10 - Castle Combe Rally Day

We have just returned after a very enjoyable day at the Castle Combe Race Circuit in Wiltshire. We were invited by the event organisers to take part in their Feature Stage and also by the GT4 Owners Club to put our Celica onto their stand and lead a procession around the race circuit  along with 20 other GT4's. There was also a small Rally Stage on the perimeter road where we were able to let our service crew experience some in-car conditions and for Paul to see the Celica in action from a spectators point of view!

30/08/10 - Treacherous Weather Conditions on Epynt Ranges but Corolla takes Class win.

Well the morning certainly wasn't a pleasant experience - it poured! Tyre choice ??? Whatever we chose you could guarantee that by the time you got to the stage the weather would have changed (in fact on average it yo-yo'd all morning between sun, drizzle and stair rods!). Anyway despite all of this the weather did brighten up and we came away with a Class win and Gary receiving the John Horton Motorsport Management 'Star Drive' salver at the awards ceremony.

See Rally Reports for full details.

27/08/10 - Testing Times!

With the car still having some handling difficulties a Test session was arranged in Tregaron Wales with Phil Roach and Graham Middleton to try and improve the 'set-up' prior to the Mewla Rally at the weekend. After lowering the car and making some other adjustments the car handled much better and we headed off to the Builth Wells.

16/08/10 - Team return from Richard Burns Memorial Rally

After a 7 hour journey the Team finally arrived at RAF Marham for the RBMR. With the clutch problem identified and new seals fitted we were hoping for of a good weekend. See Rally Reports for full details.

01/08/10 Clutch Problems Force Early Retirement

 First Outing for Corolla WRC

Unfortunately, we had to make the decision to withdraw the Corolla from the Fat Albert Stages after Stage 7 with clutch problems rather than risk causing damage to the transmission. However, we had managed to complete more than 50 Stage miles which gave us the opportunity to 'Test' and adjust settings throughout the day. After a very slow Stage 1 time (where the car stalled at a hairpin and wouldn't restart), we found ourselves in 24th position but were pleased to have made up time and were lying 6th overall when we retired. This was the first time the car had been driven at pace since the build so we were always expecting teething problems. For a view from Paul Hollingham's side of the car see Rally Reports

26/07/10 - First Event - Fat Albert Stages 31st July.

Gary and Paul are planning to use the new Corolla WRC for the first time this weekend on the Fat Albert Stages at Keevil in Wiltshire. The event has attracted a strong entry of 90 crews including four WRC cars and a host of other top class Escorts, Subaru's and Mitsubishi's. The Team has  been seeded at No. 4 and the plan is to use this event to try and learn as much as possible about the new car and test different set-ups throughout the day.

21/07/10 - Corolla WRC Log Booked and New Registration assigned.

Today has been the day that our two year project finally became reality. After what once seemed like a crazy idea that Gary had to drive to the Czech Republic to collect the ex-Henning Solberg WRC car then do numerous trips across to France, Belgium, Germany and Holland collecting the various parts required to do the rebuild ......................she's here!

07/07/10 - Goodwood Festival of Speed 2010

The Rally Team were delighted to be asked again by Toyota Europe to represent the Celica st185 Gt4 on their stand at this years Festival of Speed. The Celica was put into full original Castrol livery prior to the Goodwood event.

The event hosted by Lord March has a wonderful atmosphere and attracts over 150,000 spectators who come to see World class drivers and National Champions along with the hundreds of cars and bikes .The Festival is set within the grounds of Goodwood House (Lord March's home) and is divided into various sections, with the infamous Hill Climb which goes straight past the front of Goodwood House and proceeds up to the Top Paddock where the Rally Stage can be found. This event is 'a must' for any Motorsport enthusiast.

This year the 'Toyota Line-Up' was as follows:-

Celica st205 owned and driven by Mark Courtney, Ernst Kopp's Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo (driven by himself and former World Rally Champion BjÖrn Waldegard), Corolla WRC owned by twice British Champion Johnny Milner (driven by himself and three times British Champion Mark Higgins), Corolla WRC owned and driven by John Reid from Ireland and finally a Dakar Rally Land Cruiser driven by Frenchman Ronan Chabot.

But there was more to the festival than socialising and although the Rally Stage was short it was certainly very demanding with hairpins, flowing corners, gradients and even a jump! This meant that once again we were given the opportunity to do demonstration runs on the 1.7 mile Forest Stage which was designed by Hannu Mikkola in 2006. Although the runs are not meant to be competitive - try telling that to the drivers!

The Celica set some really good times driven by Gary and finished (we're pleased to say) each day within the top ten stage times. There were more than 60 different cars competing with many famous drivers including BjÖrn Waldegard, Ken Block, Kris Meeke, Freddy Loix, Markko Martin, Mark Higgins and Johnny Milner. Sadly Guy Wilks was unable to drive due to his recent injury.
Just as Mark Courtney was due to go out onto the Stage a spectator noticed that he was suffering from low pressure in the front tyre. Thinking he would have to abandon the run, the Dakar Land Cruiser came to the rescue with the air line carried onboard allowing the Celica to continue!

30/05/10 - Emcos Stage Rally

Despite setting fastest times on the first three stages and leading the event by 22 seconds the Toyota Celica wasn't able to start the fourth stage due to gearbox problems and the crew were forced to retire. High hopes had been set to see if the Celica could win this event for the fourth consecutive year but sadly it wasn't meant to be. See Rally Reports for full details.

**BREAKING NEWS**

08/05/10 - Festival of Speed 2010

Pictured opposite :- The Toyota Line Up at the 2009 Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Team is delighted to announce that once again they have been invited by Toyota Europe to take part in this years Goodwood Festival of Speed. Gary and Paul will be driving the Celica gt4 through the forest rally stage at the three day event. As requested by Toyota, the car will be running for the first time in full original works livery.

Shortly after the event, the Celica gt4 that we've used for the past four seasons will be up for sale. This car has taken 8 outright wins and numerous top three places and will be available with a large spares package.

19/03/10 - Sponsorship

We are currently looking for sponsors for this years campaign with our Corolla WRC. We intend to take part in at least five rounds of the high profile MSA National Asphalt Championship plus other selected rallies and publicity events. If you would be interested in being associated with and supporting our Team, please email for further information.

24/11/09 - The Finale for 2009

Well, we made it through the horrendous weather conditions and brought the Celica back home in one piece after an eventful Carfax Stages. See  Rally Reports for full details.

06/11/09 - Carfax Stage Rally

Only two weeks to go until our last rally of the season the Carfax Stages at Longcross. At this time of the year the stages are always extremely slippery often wet and with the added excitement of two stages run in darkness, it's a great test for the whole Team. With last years winner Richard Edwards in his mk2 Escort and previous winner Simon Gudgeon in his Metro 6R4 both entered we'll need to be on top form if we're to come back with a good result.
Picture from Carfax Rally 2006

27/10/09 - UTS Cheviot Rally

The problems that the Celica encountered on the Patriot Stages had led to further complications. After having the front diff rebuilt, viscus checked, new discs, bells and pads fitted, we finally headed off to Otterburn to then have half of the Team struck down by a flu virus. See Rally Reports for full details.

29/09/09 - Patriot Stages Rally

Unfortunately our rally ended on SS3 when the front n/s titanium hub failed and we lost a wheel. This was a particular blow for the Team as we had felt this could have been one of our strongest BTRDA championship rounds. See Rally Reports for full details

20/09/09 - Our 2nd Anniversary!

It's hard to believe it but we're back home tonight having just won the Anniversary Stages for second year running. The car ran really well and all the hard work paid off. See Rally Reports for summary of event.

19/09/09 - Engine Back Home

In the early hours on Saturday we arrived back in Somerset with the engine. It unfortunately meant that we have missed attending the Rally Day at Castle Combe and as you can see from the pictures taken at 11.30 this morning there is still a long way to go to get the Celica to the Anniversary Stages tomorrow. Pictured below is Rob King checking how much bhp he's got!

18/09/09 - The Missing Bolts

Everything was going so well until the new head bolts got delayed at Dublin airport. With them promised for delivery today, Fraser McKeller our engine builder waited patiently for their arrival. That was not to be and Gary and Penny spent half of Friday evening trying to locate the TNT van to intercept the parcel and eventually collected from the TNT depot  in Milton Keynes. Mission accomplished and at 8.15pm Fraser could finally start to reassemble the engine.

16/09/09 - Time Not On Our Side

After locating a new block it's now been machined and ready to be collected tomorrow (Thursday!) morning. This only gives us two days to rebuild the engine and get the car back up and running. Then there's the small matter of running the engine in - and all before Saturday. It's not looking too good at present!!

14/09/09 - Unscheduled Engine Rebuild!!

After struggling to complete the final stage on the Mewla Rally (see Rally Reports page), we've managed to trace the cause of our engine problem. Initially we thought it was the heat exchanger leaking oil into the water but after replacing it and then more testing (without success) we assumed we had a head gasket failure. Once the cylinder head had been removed we then discovered exactly what the problem was. It was the last thing we wanted to see......a crack in the block! What made matters worse was that in five days we are due to be on the BTRDA stand at the Castle Combe Rally Day followed by running Car No. 1 at the Anniversary Stages on Sunday.

03/09/09 - Event Signs Mewla Rally

A picture from last weeks rally capturing the dismal weather conditions!Returned home finishing 16th Overall and 4th placed BTRDA Crew.     The next BTRDA round is being held on September 27th at Caerwent in South East Wales.               See Rally Reports for summary of event.

12/07/09 - UPDATED - Goodwood Festival of Speed

The Toyota Rally Team were delighted to be asked by Toyota Europe to represent the Celica st185 Gt4 on their stand at this years Festival of Speed. This also meant that we would get to do demonstration runs on the 1.7 mile Forest Rally Stage which was designed by Hannu Mikkola.

The event hosted by Lord March has a wonderful atmosphere and is marked on the social calendar of most motorsport enthusiasts! It attracts many current and ex-world champions from F1 and Rallying along with 152,000 spectators!

Bjorn Waldegard drove the Toyota Celica Twincam Turbo parked directly next to us and spent alot of time on the stand talking to us about his wonderful memories of when he drove for Toyota during his career.

After talking to the first ever rally world champion, we then had the honour of queuing up behind the current world champion to enter the stage. Waiting to collect your start time behind a Citroen C4 with Sebastian Loeb sitting in it was a very surreal experience.

The Festival of Speed is a great place to meet people and make new friends and a great deal of talking and a lot of laughing took place over the whole weekend.

But there was more to the festival than socialising and although the stage was short it was certainly demanding with hairpins, flowing corners, gradients and even a jump!

More to follow.........

28/06/09

Update - Thankfully the Celica is  now back up and running in forest spec. with a new prop shaft fitted. It wasn't clear until this had been replaced as to whether or not any other damage had been sustained to the rear diff. This would not appear to be the case and now we can concentrate on a great weekend at the Festival.                         Hope to see you there!

23/06/09 - Festival of Speed - 3rd - 5th July

The Team have been invited by Toyota Europe to take part in this years Goodwood Festival of Speed. Gary and Paul will be driving the Celica through the forest stage up to eight times each day. The car is currently being changed to forest spec. in readiness for the event.

22/06/09 - Rally of the Midlands

Unfortunately our rally ended on SS4 with a broken propshaft. We had set fastest times on two of the three stages we'd completed and were just one second behind the leader. See Rally Reports for full details and in-car footage from Argents Mead town centre stage where we beat the Bogie time to follow in the next few days.

30/05/09 - NEXT EVENT - The Rally of The Midlands 19th/20th June 2009

In three weeks time our next outing is The Rally of The Midlands which is a two day event with 19 stages in and around Nuneaton and Hinkley covering 95 competitive stage miles.

The stages range from Merevale a typical stately home stage tight and twisty, to the open Mallory Park Race Circuit, then the three 15 milers at MIRA Proving Ground, Bramcote Army Barracks and the town centre stage Argents Mead. The Argents Mead stage attracts a large number of spectators and has quite a carnival atmosphere as the competitors blast around the Hinkley Town Centre.  For the last two years Gary and Paul have set the fastest stage time on this stage.

In 2007 they finished third overall and in 2008 although they were leading the event at the overnight stop then they encountered a number of problems the following day (poor visibility due to the car's demister failing in torrential rain) and finished 6th overall.

This years event is possibly the most important Rally of the year for the Team. With Gary and Paul both currently lying 2nd in the BTRDA Championship www.asphaltrallying.co.uk they need to score maximum points to stand any chance of winning this years competition.

There are 140 road miles on the event (with no chase car) and is an event that has something for everyone and the whole Team enjoys - so roll on 19th June!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

23/05/09

The Team has just returned home from Down Ampney having won the Emcos Stage Rally. Gary and Paul set fastest time on all ten stages to take their third consecutive win at the Gloucstershire venue - See Rally Reports for full details.

04/5/09 The Ellisport Longcross Stages - 10th May 2009

This is our next event which is being held at a venue that the Team knows well and we are all looking forward to returning to the fast flowing stages. It will be interesting to see how Craven Motor Club have changed the stage layouts to avoid using the tank ramps which are presently out of bounds. However, the 'snake' will still be used and anyone that has competed at Longcross will know how demanding that part of the stage can be - particularly when wet!

Seeding is due to be done this weekend and we'll let you know where we're running as soon as we have the information.

There will also be a full report on the Rally Report page after the event.

01/05/09 Emcos Stages - 23rd May 2009

We competed here in 2007 and 2008 and on both occasions were fortunate enough to win the event.

Last year however, we were lucky to finish when we developed a brake problem towards the end of Stage 2. Back into service, Rob had no option but to change an extremely hot front calliper and bleed the brakes in very limited time, which thankfully he did!

So, what does 2009 hold in store for us? ......WATCH this space!!
